Water usage decreases in March in Smithsburg

April 04, 2002|BY ANDREW SCHOTZ

SMITHSBURG - The daily average water usage in town decreased again in March, according to Public Works Director Bill Loughridge.

Water customers used an average of 177,000 gallons a day in March, Loughridge told the mayor and town council Tuesday.

That's down from 196,000 gallons a day in February and 220,000 gallons a day in January.

Although it has rained a few times recently, breaking up a long-time dry spell, Councilman Michael Rohrer said he still favors a ban on certain water uses.

"The recent rain hasn't cured the drought," Rohrer said.

Mickey Myers, who is running for mayor against Rohrer, disagreed with his idea. She said it is a good idea to conserve water, but there's no need for restrictions yet.

The town council voted to print a conservation reminder in the next town newsletter and possibly insert one in the next water bill.
