Highlights of the proposed Hagerstown budget

Highlights from Hagerstown City Administrator Bruce Zimmerman's proposed $79.55 million budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1.

Taxes


- Real estate tax rate now 73.2 cents per $100 of assessed value would be increased to 78.5 cents.

- Business equipment tax rate now $1.83 per $100 of assessed value would be about $1.96.

Sewer


- Raise rates 3.5 percent Oct. 1.

Water


- Raise rates 3.5 percent Oct. 1.

Fire Department


- About $4.1 million budget, up from almost $3.9 million in the current fiscal year.

Hiring two new firefighters.

Police Department


- About $8.9 million budget, up from almost $8.4 million in the current fiscal year.

Hagerstown Ice and Sports Complex


- $134,500 subsidy.

Claude M. Potterfield Pool


- $115,966 subsidy.

Municipal Golf Course


- $68,129 subsidy.

Community Rescue Service


- $50,000 contribution to this private nonprofit ambulance company that serves most of Hagerstown and parts of the surrounding area.

Fairgrounds Park


- $658,000 for improvements, including $175,000 for parking lot improvements, $50,000 to design improvements to the grandstand, and $10,000 for a new skateboard park.

Pangborn Park


- $88,000 in improvements, including $8,000 for two fountains for the pond, and $80,000 for parking lot improvements.
