CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - A Stephen City, Va., man was charged by Pennsylvania State Police with one count of rape Wednesday.

Nelson Eugene Ryder, 40, of 117 Highlander Ave., is being held at the Franklin County prison in lieu of $100,000 bail, police said.

The rape occurred in July 1998 at a mattress outlet on Lincoln West East in Chambersburg, police said.

GUILFORD TOWNSHIP, Pa. - An attempted break-in caused $400 in damage to a door at a Guilford Township residence Wednesday night, Pennsylvania State police reported.

Someone driving a light blue or gray car arrived at the residence on Coral Ridge Road about 12:30 p.m. and attempted to break in through the rear door, police said.


The owner of the residence was home, and the individual fled north on Coral Ridge Road, police said.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office is investigating the damaging of seven mailboxes on roads throughout the county, police reported.

Deputy 1st Class J.R. Marshall responded to a call Saturday at 9:11 a.m. on Old Waterford Road for a reported malicious destruction of property and found the mailbox had been damaged, police said.

A follow-up investigation determined several other mailboxes and posts were damaged in the same area and in the adjacent Fountainhead area along Keener Road, Cherry Tree Drive and Rolling Road, police said.

The damage was estimated at $1,600.

Several vehicles parked at Sharrett Auto in Hagerstown were broken into and a 1994 Chevrolet Silverado was stolen recently, the Washington County Sheriff's Department said.

Police said someone damaged a 1985 Scirroco, a 1992 Mazda pickup truck and a 1992 Jeep Wrangler. The windows were smashed and stereo equipment and personal items were stolen, police said.

A 1994 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, which had been left with the keys inside, was stolen.

The vehicle was described as silver over blue, long bed, two-wheel drive with chrome running boards and wheels. The pickup truck had extensive front-end damage on the passenger side and was valued at $8,000, police said.

The incident was reported Friday, police said.

Several stolen items were reported this week to the Washington County Sheriff's Department.

Among the stolen items was $933 in cash from the Hagerstown Cinema 10, reported missing Thursday morning from the 20135 Leitersburg Pike movie complex, police said.

On March 21, a $1,700 Sony digital handheld video camera was discovered missing from Hagerstown Business College at 18618 Crestwood Drive, police said. The crime was reported Wednesday.

A coat and cellular telephone were reported stolen Wednesday evening from a vehicle parked at the Sheetz at 100 E. Potomac St. in Williamsport, police said.

Two pairs of Oakley sunglasses valued at $310 were reported stolen Wednesday morning from American Outfitters at the Valley Mall, police said.

A purse and cellular telephone belonging to a student were stolen on Monday from Williamsport High School, 5 Clifton Drive in Williamsport, police said. Police have a suspect in that theft.
