Alice I. Schmidt


Alice Irene Schmidt, 91, of 55 E. Washington St., Hagerstown and formerly of Emmert Road, died Saturday, March 30, 2002, at Washington County Hospital.

Born March 16, 1911, in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late John W. and Clara Hamburg Bailey.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William P. Schmidt, in 1972.

She was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church and the church's Friendly Philathians Sunday School Class.

She was a member of local and national chapters of AARP and a volunteer at the Commission on Aging.

She is survived by a son, Paul E. Schmidt Sr. of Hagerstown; a grandson, Dr. Paul E. Schmidt Jr. of Oshkosh, Wis.; three great-grandsons; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and five brothers.

Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, Hagerstown. The Rev. Dennis L. Upton will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Tuesday at noon at the funeral home.

Harold G. Sipes


HUSTONTOWN, Pa. - Harold Gordon "Dope" Sipes, 70, of North Clear Ridge Road, died Friday, March 29 2002, at Fulton County Medical Center, McConnellsburg, Pa.

Born July 3, 1931, in McConnellsburg, he was the son of the late Scott and Beatrice Divens Sipes.

He was a cook while in the military and at various restaurants.

He served for 20 years in the U.S. Air Force, in the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

He was of the Methodist faith.

He was a member of American Legion of McConnellsburg and VFW of McConnellsburg.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Judy Ann Frain Sipes; four daughters, Rhonda R. Hoffman, Tina Marie Souders and Laura M. Foster, all of McConnellsburg, and Becky S. Sipes of Hustontown; two sons, Mitchell S. Sipes and Mark W. Sipes, both of McConnellsburg; two sisters, Marian Hunter of McConnellsburg and Dorothy Henry of Huntingdon, Pa.; a brother, Wayne Sipes of Chambersburg, Pa.; and 11 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Michael G. Sipes; a sister, Betsy Lake; and two brothers, Bruce Sipes and Daryl Sipes.

Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at M.R. Brown Funeral Home, Hustontown. Pastor Donald Bard will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, RD, McConnellsburg.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday at 9 a.m. at the funeral home.




Edwin R. Freed


MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Edwin R. Freed, 95, formerly of Middletown, died Friday, March 29, 2002, at Glade Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Walkersville, Md.

Born Dec. 16, 1906, in Frederick, Md., he was the son of the late George F. and Ellen E. Myers Freed.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary I. Covell Freed, in 1994.

He owned and operated Freed's General Store in Locust Valley near Middletown from 1931 until 1965.

He served in the National Guard.

He was a member of Locust Valley Bible Church in Middletown where he served as church council secretary and treasurer of Fellowship of Bible Ministries. He and his wife also led the Cradle Ministry.

He is survived by two sisters, Ellen Gibson of Adamstown, Md., and Betty Curran of Tuscon, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary E. Freed, and a son, Edwin R. Freed Jr.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Locust Valley Bible Church, Middletown. The Rev. Curvin D. Stambaugh will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 5 to 7 p.m. at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, Middletown. Visitation also will be Monday at 10 a.m. at the church.

Claude E. Showe Sr.


Claude E. Showe Sr., 84, of Hagerstown, who died Friday, March 29, 2002, retired as a tool crib attendant from Grove Manufacturing, and was employed by Maryland Ribbon Co. as a supervisor.

Also, he is survived by his son, Richard L. Showe of Hagerstown, and his sister, Pearl Shives of Hagerstown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 101 E. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, MD 21740.




Mildred K. Yost


CLEAR SPRING - Mildred Kathryn "Skip" Dunn Yost, 81, of Clear Spring, who died Wednesday, March 27, 2002, also was preceded in death by her sister, Madaline Jones.




Edgar R. Hoover Jr.


Edgar R. Hoover Jr., 78, of 1088 Sherman Ave., Hagerstown, and a resident of Fahrney Keedy Memorial Home in Boonsboro, died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Oct. 21, 1923, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Edgar Ralley Sr. and Margie Irene Sheiner Hoover.

He retired from Murry's Steaks Inc. in 1989 after 24 years of service, first as a salesman, then a district sales manager and finally a loss prevention auditor. Before that, he was employed by Potomac Edison Co. as a driver in the public transportation division.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theatre.
