Roundup - Kaleo loses no-hitter, win

THURMONT, Md. - First, Catoctin's Chris Kaleo lost his no-hitter. Then, Williamsport made sure he lost the game.

The Cougars' pitcher allowed no hits through 6 1/3 innings, but Williamsport pitcher Matt Mastiano started the game-winning rally in the top of the seventh as the Wildcats took a 3-1 victory in the Monocacy Valley Athletic League.

With one out in the top of the seventh, Mastiano singled, pinch-hitter Greg Small singled and Derrick Sweigert walked to load the bases.

Eddie Martin followed with a two-run single to right-center field and Josh Bowers capped the comeback with a run-scoring groundout for Williamsport (1-1, 1-1). Mastiano finished with seven strikeouts and allowed just five hits.


Catoctin (1-1, 1-1) got its run in the third when Jeff Swanson singled and Chris Legore doubled him in. Kaleo finished with four strikeouts.

HUMMELSTOWN, Pa. - A.J. Freelove struck out 10, including five in the last three innings, as the Indians scored twice in their first at-bat and hung on for a season-opening win.

Phil Woodring and Eli Rock led off the game with singles and scored on a single by Adam Caron and a groundout by Justin Kauffman for Waynesboro (1-0). Freelove gave up an unearned run in the fourth, but cruised home from there. Woodring and Rock both had two hits.

Jefferson 11, King's Academy 2

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Darrell Wolfe had two hits, including a home run, while winning pitcher Brian McLaughlin struck out 11 as Jefferson advanced in the Hawaiian Tropic Classic.

It was the 1,000th game in the school's 30-year history. Jefferson has won 801 of those games.

Donell Lee, Steve Kozak and Billy Powell each had two hits and Kevin Cole had two RBI for the Cougars (6-1), who play Myrtle Beach High in the championship bracket quarterfinals today.

ST. JAMES - The Blue Storm scored four runs in the third inning off three errors, then sealed a season-opening win on Garrett Fix's grand slam in the fourth inning. Dave Cline and Blaine Lay combined on a two-hitter.

THURMONT, Md. - Shawna Wilkes struck out six in a no-hitter and also went 2-for-3 to lead the Cougars in an MVAL win. Jess Valentine went 3-for-3 and knocked in a run for Catoctin (2-0, 2-0). Williamsport falls to 0-2, 0-2.

The Hubs scored the final seven goals of the game - all in the second half - to pick up their first win of the season. Lindsay Kukler and Hannah Hardinge both had two goals and Carly Handler finished with 15 saves for North (1-1).


St. James 13, Mercersburg 7

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Tommy Syverson had two goals and four assists and Ali Smith had 14 saves for the Saints in a season-opening win. Joe Thomas, David Hammond and John Clark all had three goals for St. James.

Frederick 16, Catoctin 2

FREDERICK, Md. - Brandon Skaggs had four goals and two assists and Pat Brennan had two goals and an assist to move the Cadets to 3-0. Jason Jachowski and Matt McGinnis scored twice, Andrew Arhens had a goal and two assists and Brent Brubaker had a goal and an assist. Josh Jachowski and Mike Couch combined for eight saves.
