David Jordan has been named the new executive director of the Washington County Community Action Council in Hagerstown.

Jordan will start work at the local service agency on April 1.

"I'm very excited about coming to Hagerstown and Washington County," Jordan said Monday during a phone interview from his office at the Community Assistance Network in Baltimore County.

Jordan serves as assistant executive director of that community service agency - which is similar in size and budget to CAC - and coordinates the state conference of community action agencies.

Jordan has overseen the day-to-day operations, finances and food pantry management of the Community Assistance Network during his eight-year tenure with the organization, he said.

"I enjoy seeing the results of what we do in social services agencies, especially helping people get on their feet again," said Jordan, 46, of York, Pa.

CAC's top position has been vacant since July 2001, when longtime executive director Cheryl Walkley resigned to become deputy state director of Telamon Corporation in Martinsburg, W.Va.

CAC's Board of Directors chose Jordan from a pool of nearly 50 applicants, said board member Mike Unruh, who chaired the search committee.

Jordan's knowledge and experience, leadership philosophy, "open and down-to-earth" personal style and vision to make CAC a model for the state made him an ideal candidate for the job, Unruh said.
