Brunswick tops North in baseball-roundup

BRUNSWICK, Md. - Tommy Blumenauer hit a two-run home run with one out in the sixth to allow Brunswick to break a 3-3 tie for a season-opening victory Saturday over North Hagerstown, 5-3.

Eric Quijada collected a one-out single of North starter T.J. Hose to set up Blumenauer's blast.

Brunswick (1-0, 1-0) took a 3-0 lead in the first with the help of three North errors.

The Hubs (0-1, 0-1) tied the game in the third, keyed by Eli Riveria's two-run double.

Brian Baugher pitched a complete-game victory for Brunswick, allowing three earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out eight.

Boonsboro 10, Middletown 2

BOONSBORO - Nathan Kaetzel struck out nine in six innings and added two doubles and three RBI as the Warriors got a win in the season opener for both teams.


Mike Fravel had a two-run homer and Cody Hanes and Derrick Metzger both had two hits for Boonsboro, which trailed 1-0 after three innings before exploding on offense and getting a key escape from Kaetzel in the top of the fourth inning.

Willie Brandenburg homered in the third to give Middletown the lead.

FREDERICK, Md. - Ryan Blizzard hit a two-run homer and Matt Fogle had a solo homer in the third inning as St. John's at Prospect Hall defeated Sidwell Friends.

Dan Ryley (1-0) went four innings to get the win for SJPH (5-1).

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. - Jefferson (3-1) allowed 11 unearned runs, including seven in the seventh, in losing a non-division game to Urbana.

Donell Lee had three hits and four RBI, including a two-run home rin the fifth inning, Brian McLaughlin had two hits and Brian Peterson had two RBI for Jefferson.

Smithsburg 12-14, Boonsboro 11-1: Smithsburg swept a doubleheader as Chip Rupert had two hits in each game. Wayne Rumbaugh had three hits and five RBI in the first game and Joe Acre had two hits for Smithsburg. Jake Rose had two hits for Boonsboro. Mike Fox struck out 11 and had three hits for Smithsburg in the second game while Josh Daniels had two hits.


Smithsburg sweeps

BALTIMORE - Smithsburg Gold defeated Overlea 16-11 and Smithsburg Purple downed Overlea, 15-5. For Gold, Emily Small had four goals and four assists, Kelly Verdier and Sara Sanders had three goals apiece and Jordan Williams and Stephanie Smith had two goals each. For Purple, Laura Best had seven goals and Alicia Hoffman had four.


Jefferson surprises at home

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. - The Cougars snapped the 22-match winning streak of defending Virginia state champion Handley on their way to a 5-2 victory in the final of the Cougar Classic. Jefferson (5-0) also defeated perennial Va. powerhouse Warren County in the semifinals, 4-3.
