Carter lifts Goretti-Saturday baseball

March 25, 2002|BY JACK HILL III

Senior southpaw Josh Carter used both his pitching arm and his bat to led the St. Maria Goretti Gaels past the Berkeley Springs Indians 5-3 on Saturday.

Carter went the distance in his first start of the spring as he struck out 10 batters and did not surrender aany walks. He allowed one earned run and four hits. Carter also picked off two baserunners during the first two innings of the game.

"It was good to get out there and get some innings in," Carter said. "I had good command of my curveball today. I felt like I was in control all day."

Carter helped himself out with his bat during the bottom of the fifth inning. Sophomore Nick Adenhart started the one-out rally with a double down the left field line. Carter then helped St. Maria Goretti snap a 2-2 tie by crushing a 400-foot, two-run homer into the trees in left-center field to give the Gaels the lead for good.

"I had a good day at the plate today, too," Carter added. "I haven't been seeing too many good pitches to hit. I finally got some fastballs and I was able to drive them. I was sitting on a fastball. It was out over the plate and I put a real good swing on it."

Carter and Adenhart got two hits each for the Gaels (1-1). One of Adenhart's two hits was a solo homer in the first.

First-year St. Maria Goretti coach John Sechler said he was impressed with Carter's contributions.

"Hats off to Josh Carter," Sechler said. "He kept us in the ballgame for the whole time and he provided the offense as well. It was excellent pitching. He did a real good job of mixing his pitches and keeping them off-balanced. The great thing about it was that he was able to keep his pitch count down and let the defense do the work."

"That home run kind of broke it open and gave us the lead again," Sechler added. "Carter is a senior leader and he provided the spark when we needed it."
