Board of education approves budget

March 20, 2002|BY TARA REILLY

The Washington County Board of Education approved a $132.8 million operating budget for fiscal year 2003 Tuesday night.

The move allows the School Board to bring the proposed budget to a public hearing before the Washington County Board of Commissioners on April 2 at 7 p.m. at Hagerstown Community College's Kepler Theater.

The School Board is seeking a $5.78 million increase from the county over its current contribution of $68.3 million. The county, however, has proposed a $1.4 million increase to the operating budget, which is more than $4 million less than the School Board requested.

The School Board said it will probably make changes to the budget after the public hearing.

The board also approved its $5 million Capital Improvement Plan, which covers fiscal years 2003-2008. The plan includes a $500,000 increase from the county commissioners. The commissioners have already approved the increase.
