Amber Wright, a Boonsboro Elementary School fourth-grader, is the grand finalist in this year's Home Chemical Safety Poster Contest. She was presented with the award during Tuesday's meeting of the Washington County Board of Commissioners. She won a $100 savings bond, $100 gift card to Circuit City and other prizes.
Tyler Palladino of Hickory Elementary School and Devin Crawford of Salem Avenue Elementary were finalists in the contest, which is organized by the Local Emergency Planning Committee.
A videotape and school curriculum developed by the committee taught fourth-grade students at Boonsboro, Hickory and Salem Avenue how to identify hazardous chemicals in the home and cautioned against mixing chemicals. Students developed posters as part of the curriculum.
The commissioners, along with the Hagerstown City Council, designated March 17 to 23 as Home Chemical Safety Week.
