mail call for 3-18

March 18, 2002

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some` of the calls we have received lately:

"To the person who called in and said they believe that deadbeat fathers and mothers should not be sterilized and they should be allowed to have two children be on welfare for five years. Call in and leave your name and number so we could set it up for you to pay for two children so their mother can lie on the couch for five years. Maybe after you have to do that, you will change your mind."

"I was reading in Thursday's Mail Call and this lady said she was a registered nurse and was upset about someone making the remark that unwed parents should be sterilized. I read that in Mail Call and I don't think they meant unwed parents. I think they meant people who were on welfare. She said she was a registered nurse and she made the statement, 'marriage is the leading cause of divorce.' That is an unbelievable statement coming from someone who is well-educated. Duh, you can't get divorced until you are married."

"I want to respond to the Mail Call in Thursday's paper. 'Justice has been done for the five children who died at their mother's hand. It took her up to six minutes to kill each one of them since she knew what she was doing and justice will be served if she gets the death penalty.' Well, how could justice ever be served here on Earth for losing five little angels? It's not our place to judge her. There is only one place she will be judged properly and will pay one way or another for her crime. That is by the hand of Him. When she gets to Heaven and it is judgment day, that is when she will get properly judged and will be taken care of. It is not up to us to judge her. The good book says, 'he who has not committed sin, let him throw the first stone.' Sin is sin. I think the good book says it best. Throw that stone if you can."

"I was at Clear Spring Middle School on Wednesday and there was this boy that came out of the school with a pair of pants on that looked like they had umbrella legs and a hat that looked like it might have been a foot tall. I would like to know why the schools don't encourage a dress code?"

"Talking about those prisoners on the bay, they did a lot of harm to our people. Using an airplane would be too expensive. Use a boat. Go 10 miles out into the Atlantic and tell them to walk back."

"While we've finally taken a firmer stance regarding hit-and-run drivers, especially those who run red lights, why are we dragging our feet regarding 'hit-and-run' building contractors who leave taxpayers with enormous problems resulting from more and more housing developments? Can't we learn from Frederick County?"

"In response to the woman who needed someone to talk to and they have been to the doctor and all and they have nobody to talk to. My advice to you is see a counselor, a therapist. They have free therapists, too. They are very helpful and they are great listeners. It will help you. I know from experience. I hope you have good luck."

"A few weeks ago there was a lady who wanted to know how to make potato candy. I responded to her and told her how to make it and I just wanted to know how it turned out. This is from the potato candy lady. I am dying to know."

"For the people who wanted the address for St. Jude's Hospital. It is St. Jude, P.O. Box 50, Memphis, Tenn. 38101-9929."

"I am concerned about the number of retail businesses that won't hire a mature, responsible 14- almost 15-year-old student who is willing to work, able to work and has a working permit. You go into many places where you see people who don't want to work and have bad attitudes. It's just an age thing but with the work permit, it's a legal way for a 14-year-old to work and with summer around the corner, the child would be eligible for summer employment. Is there anyone out there interested in hiring an honest, hardworking 14- almost 15-year-old, mature male? Put a number in Mail Call."

"We have a car that we would like to give away. It's not running. Can someone tell me of an organization that will accept such a vehicle? Call me at 301-790-2580 and leave a message."

"The hospital belongs out at Robinwood where all the doctors are and adequate parking. Everything can be together for patients who have trouble getting around."

"I would like to thank Paul for the outstanding work he did on my case. I now have a positive view of lawyers and I would highly recommend him to anyone who needs an honest lawyer."

"In response to the Mail Call about wanting to keep the hospital downtown, be aware it is called a county hospital; it is not a Hagers-town hospital. Let them move to where it will be convenient for everyone."
