Blacks urged to give blood

March 18, 2002

Today's bloodmobile at Memorial Recreation Center on North Avenue is open to everyone. However, blacks are being strongly urged to donate so several critically-needed blood types unique to blacks can be obtained.

"Everyone is welcome but we have an urgent need for U-neg and Duffy-neg blood types," said Cindy Blackstock Kline, director of emergency services at the Red Cross chapter of Washington County.

The blood drive is between 2 and 7 p.m. with no appointment necessary, Kline said.

Special requests for blood types unique to blacks are rare in Washington County, Kline said, but critical need has prompted them.
