Allegany takes another two from HCC

Even though this is only the early part of the season, the Hagerstown Community College Hawks already know all about the Allegany College Trojans.

The reason for that is the winless Hawks have suffered all four of their losses to the Trojans after being swept in a pair of Maryland JuCo Conference doubleheaders on back-to-back Saturdays.

The latest pair of losses came Satuday, 12-0 and 12-9.

The Hawks hurt themselves by committing 10 errors in the second game loss.

"In game two, it was one of the worst defensive performances that I have ever seen," HCC coach Scott Jennings said. "It's disappointing to commit 10 errors against No. 20-ranked Allegany and still only lose by three runs. We were brutal, defensively. The sad thing is that most of those plays were routine. There is no way that we can beat Allegany when we make 10 errors in one game."

HCC jumped out to a 4-0 lead with four runs in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI single by Jeff Kirkpatrick and a three-run triple by Josh Berger.

But Allegany (9-1, 4-0) came right back to score five runs in the top of the fourth to take the lead for good. The Trojans loaded the bases with nobody out on a couple of errors and a walk. Catcher Nick Gozzard then blasted a grand slam to left. Two outs later, Allegany used a pair of infield singles and a throwing error to get its final run of the inning.

The Trojans then put the game out of reach by taking advantage of five Hawks errors during the top of the fifth to score seven unearned runs.

HCC scored five runs in the sixth to cut the final margin down to 12-9.

In the first game, Allegany southpaw pitcher Mitch Lemasters hurled a two-hit shutout. His teammates gave him an early 6-0 lead to work with by scoring four runs in the third and two more runs in the fourth.
