Shepherd gets first win over Mount Olive

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - Shepherd College used a 13-hit attack en route to a 12-2 win over Mount Olive at Searborough Field on Tuesday.

The victory was Shepherd's first-ever win over the Trojans in the five-year series.

The Rams took a 5-0 lead in the third inning behind a six-hit barrage. Preston Miller, Jason Walck, Brian Powell, Mike Spry, and Charlie Crummond each singled, while Jason Rhea smacked a double.

Shepherd added a run in the fourth to take a 6-0 advantage when Spry singled home Miller.

The Rams added four more runs on four hits in the sixth, taking a commanding 10-0 advantage. Shepherd added single runs in the seventh and ninth to complete its biggest scoring output of the year.

The Trojans got on the board in teh seventh on a two-run homer from designated hitter Robert Borden.

Spry led the Rams (5-2-1) with a 3-for-5 effort with three RBI. Walck and Rhea each added two hits, while Rhea and Powell drove in two runs each.


Shepherd starter J.R. Fitzwater scattered four hits in seven innings to gain his first win as a Ram. He had eight strikeouts and only allowed one earned run.

FREDERICK, Md. - Andy Ivins had six strikeouts in two innings, and Ryan Blizzard had five strikeouts in two innings as St. John's at Prospect Hall won its season opener on Monday. Danny Turner had two hits and stole two bases for SJPH.

Rams name women's soccer coach

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Jim Sweeney, a 1998 graduate of Albright College, has been named the women's soccer coach at Shepherd College. Sweeney, a goalie in college, held school records for shutouts (31), shutouts ina season (four) and career saves (698).

His coaching experience includes three years as an assistant at Abright, the Olympic Developmental Program in eastern Pennsylvania, and assistan coach for both the men's and women's programs at St. Edwards University, Austin, Texas.

Sweeney will also serve as the assistant director for the Shepherd College Wellness Center.

Colt League sign-ups

Registration for 15, 16 and 17 years olds will be held for the Hagerstown Colt League Thursday-Saturday at the Colt League field. On Thursday and Friday, the times are 7-9 p.m. On Saturday, the time is 10 a.m.-noon. Please bring a birth certificate.
