Williamsport's Massey headed to NCAA wrestling tourney

RALEIGH, N.C. - Virginia's Jimi Massey, a Williamsport graduate, earned a second consecutive berth in the NCAA national wrestling tournament by winning the 184-pound class this weekend at the 2002 Mat Jam, which featured the Atlantic Coast Conference championships.

Massey, who scored his second straight ACC title, advances to the national tournament on March 21-23 in Albany, N.Y.

Massey was one of three wrestlers who won ACC titles for UVa. The Cavaliers finished third in the ACC race with 66 points, trailing champion North Carolina State by 17 points and runnerup North Carolina with 72 1/2. Maryland finished fourth with 59 1/2 points.

Virginia's Massey upset Maryland's Jake Stork in the finals an easy 9-3 win. He had a pin and two decisions in his three tournament matches.
