Stella E. Rotz


QUINCY, Pa. - Stella Elizabeth Pugh Rotz, 91, of Quincy United Methodist Home, and formerly of Shady Grove, Pa., died Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at the nursing home.

Born March 28, 1910, in Chambersburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Jacob K. and Alice Strike Pugh.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard N. Rotz, in 1989. They were married Nov. 28, 1930.

She attended New Franklin, Pa., schools.

She worked as a seamstress at Stanley Co. in Chambersburg for a number of years.

She was a member of Calvary Assembly of God Church in Waynesboro, Pa., where she was a member of the Adult Sunday School class and Women's Ministries.

She was a member of National AARP.

She is survived by one daughter, Louise E. Rotz of Waynesboro; two sons, Roy D. Rotz of Chambersburg, and Harold E. Rotz of Woodbridge, Va.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by David and Martha Strike, who raised her after the death of her mother; one sister, Carrie Rosenberry; and three brothers, George Pugh, Roy Pugh and Paul Pugh.

Services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Calvary Assembly of God Church, Waynesboro. The Revs. Dawn N. Newsome and Walter A. Stuart will officiate. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery, Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro.

Mary E. Sherman


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Mary Elizabeth Sherman, 87, of Falling Spring Nursing Center, and formerly of McConnellsburg, Pa., died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at Waynesboro Hospital, Waynesboro, Pa.

Born July 5, 1914, in Chambersburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late George A. and Mary Frances Gearhold Shoemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Sherman.

She was a homemaker.

She is survived by four daughters, Ruth Bishal of Harvinger, N.C., Mary Gustafson of Albrightsville, Pa., Nancy Shrader of Chambersburg, and Sue Lenherr of DuBois, Pa.; two sons, Donald Sherman of Chambersburg, and William Sherman of Fayetteville, Pa.; 12 grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.

A memorial service will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Falling Spring Nursing Center, Chambersburg. The Rev. Stuart Troutman will officiate.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, Chambersburg.




Ralph L. Bowen


CHEWSVILLE - Ralph Leroy Bowen, 66, of 21030 Twin Springs Drive, died Sunday, March 3, 2002, at his home.

Born May 23, 1935, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late John C. and Bessie Susan Purdham Bowen.

He was a graduate of Hagerstown High School.

He was barn manager for MacDonald Boarding Stable.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during the Korean War aboard the USS Adirondack.

He was a member of the American Legion.

He is survived by three daughters, Debra L. Cline of Hedgesville, W.Va., Marchiel A. Schlotter of Blanchard, Okla., and Robin L. MacDonald of Hagerstown; three sisters, Frances Boward of Boonsboro, and Betty Fichen and Hazel Fraker, both of Hagerstown; one brother, Lynn Bowen of Hagerstown; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Dorothy Evans; and one brother, Clarence Bowen.

Memorial services will be Thursday at 7 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, Hagerstown. The Rev. John W. Schildt will officiate.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:30 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.




Paul W. Knode


Paul W. Knode, 76, formerly of 11 W. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, died Monday, March 4, 2002, at Avalon Manor Nursing Home, Hagerstown.

Born May 6, 1925, he was the son of the late Alfred L. and Clair L. Potter Knode.

He was a lead guitarist and local musician for many years.

He served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper and infantryman.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hagerstown.

He is survived by one daughter, Paula M. Young; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, Potomac Street, Hagerstown. The Rev. George A. Limmer will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.




Robert S. Gantz


WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Robert S. Gantz, 83, of 331 S. Church St., died Monday, March 4, 2002, at his home.

Born Nov. 6, 1918, in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late Samuel J. and Hazel Ruth Sprenkle Gantz.

His wife, Marilyn L. Davis Gantz, whom he married Sept. 9, 1949, died March 21, 1997.

He was a 1938 graduate of Waynesboro High School.

He served in the U.S. Army in Germany during World War II, where he received the Purple Heart. He was one of three area residents held as a POW in Stalag IIB near Dusseldorf, Germany, from Nov. 24, 1944, to April 12, 1945.

He retired in 1981 from Teledyne Landis Machine after 21 years of service as a machinist. Prior to his military service, he worked for H.L. Null Machine Shop.
