Shepherd wins season-opening baseball game-roundup

WILSON, N.C. - Jon Serrano's sacrifice fly scored Mike Spry to break and eighth-inning tie to lift Shepherd College over Barton College 6-4 Monday in the Rams' season opener.

The Rams led 2-1 in the third on Jason Rhea's RBI groundout and Spry scoring on a wild pitch. Jake Ellifritz, who had a sacrifice bunt in the third inning, had an RBI single and Rhea added another RBI single.

Justin Collins pitched a scoreless seventgh to pick up the win. Jimmy Jackson had a two-inning save.

HVA wins title

TERRELL, Texas - Highland View Academy rallied to win the Southwest Christian College Tournament Saturday defeating Greater Miami, 71-70.


Trailing by three with less than 10 seconds left in the game, Ewunet Affaw stole the way and went the length of the court to score a layup that closed the gap to 70-69. Greater Miami could not inbound the ball cleanly and Highland View scored on a court-length pass to Andrew Williams for the game-winning layup.

Wil Iverson and Williams, who had 22 points in the title game, were named to the All-Tournament team.


HVA falls in final

TERRELL, Texas - Cassie Iskra was named to the All-Tournament team as Highland View Academy lost in the championship game, 47-33 to Spring Valley. Iskra had 22 points in the title game.


Suns seek non-profit organizations

The Hagerstown Suns area searching for non-profit or any fundraising organizations in the regional area to work in the concession stands during the season. This is a chance for organizations to keep a percentage of the profits raised at the ballpark to utilize their organization.

Shepherd football signs four

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Shepherd College has signed four football players, with three of those players scouted as defensive players from Virginia. Loren White (6-1, 230) is a defensive end out of Woodbridge, Va., Mark Reed (5-11, 170) is a defensive back out of Richmond, Va., and Jeremy Bailey (6-1, 225) is a linebacker out of Culpepper, Va. Offensive lineman James Violand (6-3, 280) is from Columbia, Md.
