Burial vault storage building burns

March 04, 2002

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - A building on Van Clevesville Road that was used to store burial vaults burned early Sunday morning, a fire official said.

It is not known what started the fire in the building, which is owned by Ray Walls, said Capt. Steve Gorman of the Shepherdstown Volunteer Fire Co.

A neighbor heard an explosion in the building and then saw flames, said Gorman.

When firefighters arrived about 1:30 a.m., flames were shooting up through the roof, said Gorman.

The building, which was located a half mile from the intersection with W.Va. 480, contained about 12 concrete vaults, Gorman said.

Firefighters from Shepherdstown, Baker Heights, Sharpsburg, Md., the Independent Volunteer Fire Co. and the Citizens Volunteer Fire Co. battled the blaze for about three hours, said Gorman.
