Mail Call for 3/4

March 04, 2002

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"For the council people of Hagerstown who are for all this hoopla about these national historic places. I have a good idea, let's turn your homes into archives and then we can go around taking pictures of all the historic places in Hagerstown and then put them in your homes. Then we could go tear these places down. Especially the fairgates at the Fairgrounds, which by the way isn't a building at all, it's termites holding hands. Come on, taxpayers of Hagers-town, wake up and get these council members out of here and stop supporting them,"

"For the people complaining about the school superintendent's wages. You need to check out what people are getting paid. Especially the one that is in charge of thousands of employees, has a doctor's degree and years of experience. Ask the head of your credit card company or a local business owner what they make. You will be surprised. If the job is so easy, go get it, get eight or more years of college, get the education and apply for the job. I want to pay the superintendent a good wage. My children deserve the best."

"Americans have to remember that our enemies are just as determined about their agenda as we are about ours. So dismissing them as cowards and weak is wrong. To do so would be underestimating our enemy. If anything we would be better off overestimating, like we did in Desert Storm. Charley Reese is not a traitor, as one caller said. Mr. Reese also said, 'To recognize the virtue of an enemy is not to approve of him, or what he does.' We know these terrorists are smart, even though they are misguided, wrong and evil. We have to be smarter, organized and determined to defeat this evil in our world. I believe that we are up to the task."

"To the preacher that was speaking about tolerance in the paper, you are exactly right. The good book doesn't say anything about tolerance. God's laws are His laws and if you break any of His commandments, you sin. The reason these other preachers that preach tolerance, is because they don't want to offend anyone. You keep on speaking the truth."

"I know that there are addresses that you can write to be taken off mailing list for different solicitations. Is there an address that you can write to, to be taken off the telephone solicitation list for MCI? I am tired of them calling me every other night."

"This is another call in regards to the guy who wants the Indian names dropped from schools and whatever. People, stop and rethink this issue. I agree with Mr. Regan totally and I'm part Cherokee and quite proud of it. Do you really want your schools, sports teams and such to be named after people that scalped men, women and children alive, who strapped prisoners down with wet leather straps on anthills to be tortured, who tortured people with snakes, fire, scorpions, etc.? Who raided villages and killed anyone who got in their way? Who snuck into forts and camps in the middle of the night, just to kill? Who burned villages and raped women? Do I need to go on? You're getting angry but perhaps not for the right reasons. I think it's because someone is trying to tell you how to think and trying to control you. Rethink your reasoning on this and maybe you'll agree with Mr. Regan. There's always another side to the story, usually the one no one thinks about. Thank you."

"Sunday, Feb. 24, our family went to City Park to see the swans and visit the museums. During that time, we were shocked to see people walking dogs on leashes. There are signs forbidding dogs in the park and this has never been allowed since I can remember. Why do they keep bringing them, when they are not allowed? I guess they think the signs don't pertain to them. There is enough stuff on the ground from the ducks, we don't need it from the dogs, too."

"What do you think of what our local government is giving the prisoners here in our town? They only get three hot meals, a nice clean bed, free education, a phone, a TV and heaven only knows how much more. Including free medical attention at the latest rate of $808,928 per year contract. Our law-abiding citizens and the elderly cannot afford such luxuries, we have to do without. These people are getting caught pushing dope and other things from Washington D.C., New York and Baltimore and Florida. They love it here. In our prisons here, they have it made, it's more like a paradise. Is it any wonder our taxes are going sky high? Wake up, America."

"This is for the lady who has quart jars to give away, I am very interested, call me at 301-797-7713."
