Rams women fall in upset

February 28, 2002

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Crystal Kestner had 25 points and 12 rebounds as No. 11 Concord upset No. 3 Shepherd 69-62 Wednesday to advance to the West Virginia Conference semifinals for the first time since 1990.

Jennifer Pollinger added 19 points for surprising Concord (14-14), which earlier this season had lost nine straight games.

Shepherd (19-9) couldn't get in the same rhythm of its first-round game, when it beat Bluefield State 102-75. Shepherd made just two of its first 16 shots against Concord and never led after the game's opening minutes.

Shepherd stormed back from a 12-point halftime deficit. Jennifer Westervelt scored nine of her 17 points during a 16-4 run that cut the deficit to 49-47 with 8:37 remaining.

But Concord's Christina Plutz hit an inside basket, then stole the ensuing inbounds pass, and Kestner scored four straight points to put Concord ahead 57-51 with 6:18 remaining.

Shepherd, which is 1-6 at the Charleston Civic Center since 1997, got no closer than three points the rest of the way.
