Fairgrounds operations to be discussed

Hagerstown City Councilman Kristin B. Aleshire said Tuesday that he was almost locked inside Fairgrounds Park last week, and he questioned whether the in-line hockey rink there should be open more.

Aleshire's comments prompted the council to agree to set aside time at an upcoming meeting to review how the park is run.

During the comments portion of the Tuesday council meeting, Aleshire said he was in-line skating at the fairgrounds at around 6 p.m. Wednesday or Thursday when he noticed the gates were being locked.

Aleshire eventually caught up with the worker locking the gates and was able to leave, but he said the experience made him uncomfortable at the park.

Councilwoman Penny May Nigh said the fairgrounds is supposed to be open until 10 p.m., but the park is regularly closed earlier.

Aleshire said he spoke with a youth who was using the in-line hockey rink at the park who told Aleshire that the rink is usually locked.

Lewis Metzner said the in-line rink, essentially a concrete floor, should be open.

Metzner said the council should discuss the fairgrounds during an upcoming meeting.
