Mail Call for 2/26

February 27, 2002

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"If I was in the military I would never get on a helicopter. Why would anyone in the military want to get on one? For some reason, the government can't keep them in the air. Do you realize that we are losing more people in our own helicopter exercise classes than we are during the past couple of wars? Why they can't keep them in the air is beyond me. I am tired of seeing helicopter crashes in the paper during our own exercises. It's pathetic."

"To the man from Kensington, Md., who is getting into Washington County business. First of all, I don't think we asked if you really liked the names and I feel that you should mind your own business. I graduated from one of those schools and I wasn't offended and I don't think anyone else in the past 60 years was offended. Far be it for someone who doesn't even believe in Santa Claus to call up Washington County and complain about a name being on our school's mascot. I think it's offensive for you to even open your mouth. If you want to complain about school, why don't you go to Afghanistan where they are just getting ready to reopen their schools and put your name on them."

"Can someone tell me why if North Korea sells weapons to Iran they are part of an act of evil, but if China sells weapons to Iran they get a state visit from our President Bush? Sounds to me like Bush is a hypocrite. Let's not forget Ronald Reagan and Bush's father sold weapons to Iraq to fight Iran, another hypocrite."

"Know all you can about your own medical condition. Never completely trust your doctor or hospitals. They bury their mistakes. Whenever possible, take someone with you. They should remember what they said and ask questions. I can prove this statement."

"I am reading the paper on Friday, Feb. 22, and I notice there is an article in there to Del. Shank, thanking him for doing something about the parking tickets that are paid late, now how about doing something about the banks charging $35 for returned checks. I too agree with this. I think they should pay $100 for a returned check. Anyone who writes a bad check and puts them out, belongs in prison or doesn't need a checking account. Also, I am not a member of the banking association."

"To the lady whose grandson possibly has ADD, ADHD or dyslexia. The school has psychologists that test, free of charge. All you have to do is tell the principal and teacher that you want your child or grandchild tested by the school psychologist and they have to do it. This child can go ahead and get special assistance that shouldn't cost you a penny. If you have any more difficulties with this, call back into Mail Call and I can give you additional information."

"I saw where a police officer in Waynesboro, Pa., gets $32,000 to start. Well, they probably earned theirs. I have been in a grocery store three or four times in the last two weeks and every time I am in there, I have been in there for at least an hour each time. There is a Washington County Sheriff's car there, sitting there talking to their girlfriend or wife. When I come back out an hour later, they are still sitting there talking, in uniform, not off duty. What is going on with our tax money? Why don't they go down on Eastern Boulevard and Dual Highway and catch some of these red light runners. No wonder Washington County doesn't have any money, is this what we are paying for?"

"I see an article on the four candidates for the HCC president. I wonder why we didn't hear about the candidates for the Washington County Board of Education's superintendent?"

"I am a 21-year-old single mother of one child and I find it very hard to find any apartments or houses around the Washington County area that accept Section 8 applicants. I am in desperate need of a place for myself and my son. But because people abuse the Section 8 program, nobody wants to give us a chance. I think this is wrong and I don't think everyone should be discriminated against because of everyone else."

"Is there a reason why Friday's and Saturday's paper had the same article and headline about Stanley being convicted of murder? Can't the editorial staff come up with a different story? Are you running out of stories or what? This doesn't make sense to me."

"About the handicapped signs. I know of two people that have two handicapped parking spots on a street that has very very limited parking, only about 11 parking spots, these two people are not at all handicapped and shouldn't be allowed to take up two parking spots like that when they don't need them. Is there someone we can contact to see if this is necessary."
