McConnellsburg earn state berth, district final-roundup

LOYSBURG, Pa. - Drew Washabaugh hit a 10-foot jumper with four seconds left in the game to lift McConnellsburg into the Class A District 5 finals with a 56-55 victory over Turkeyfoot Valley at Northern Bedford High School on Monday.

The Spartans (19-7) will play Conemaugh Township in the championship game Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown. Regardless of the outcome, McConnellsburg qualifies for the state tournament.

McConnellsburg trailed by one with 25 seconds remaining. Following a missed foul shot by Turkeyfoot, the Spartans pushed the ball upcourt and worked it to Washabaugh, who drained the game winner.

Washabaugh led the Spartans with 16 points. Steve Weller had 12 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks, Mike Hill had 10 points and nine rebounds and Scott Earley had 11 points and five assists.

Conemaugh Township 73, Southern Fulton 60: Southern Fulton battled back from an 11-point deficit at halftime to tie the game at 46-47 in the fourth quarter, but Conemaugh Township pulled away at Chestnut Ridge High School.

"We dug ourselves a hole in the first half," Southern Fulton coach Kent Hendershot said. "We tied it early in the fourth quarter, but they made their foul shots when we fouled and we couldn't score on the other end."

Dustin Wills had 19 points and eight rebounds and Matt Meyer had 11 rebounds for Southern Fulton (22-4).

Walkersville 41, Fort Hill 39: At Cumberland, the Lions overcame a horrendous night at the free throw line and a 3-pointer by Fort Hill that sent the game into overtime to beat the Sentinels and advance to the region semifinals.

Emily Lancaster converted a three-point play in the overtime period to put Walkersville (21-2) ahead for good.

Koffi Harrison had 10 points and 12 rebounds, Lancaster had six rebounds and Gina Casadei had five steals for the Lions, who will play host to Middletown on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
