SMITHSBURG - Leading just 25-20 at halftime after a cold first half, the Smithsburg Leopards knew that they had to have a hot third quarter.

The Leopards outscored Williamsport 14-3 in the third and went on to a 51-30 victory over the Wildcats Monday night in a Class 1A West girls basketball quarterfinal playoff game.

Second-seeded Smithsburg (20-3) will play Westmar in the first game of a semifinal doubleheader Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Fort Hill High School. Allegany and undefeated Southern Garrett will play in the second semifinal at 7:30.

Smithsburg junior guard Katy Powell scored 14 of her game-high 25 points during the second half, including eight points during the big third quarter. Powell also made six steals.

"We enhanced our defensive pressure more in the second half," Powell said. "We made the pressure more intense and we ran the ball more. We threw in some different defenses. That caused them to make some turnovers and we got some easy layups."

Eariel Gholson had nine rebounds and four assists, while Emily Hickman grabbed 11 rebounds for the Leopards.

"We rebounded better and we defended better in the second half," Smithsburg coach Jimmy Powell said. "I thought that Williamsport played a scrappy game tonight."

Sophomore center Lindsey Plotner had 13 points and 21 rebounds and Jackie Hamilton grabbed seven rebounds for the Wildcats (8-16).

"Our inside people, Lindsey Plotner and Jackie Hamilton, showed how good they were by controlling the inside in the first half," Williamsport coach Curtis Graff said. "The kids have come so far from where we started that I can't feel any better about what we have done."
