Cougars start off strong



HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Sixteen area high school wrestlers will return to the Civic Arena at 11:30 this morning still in the hunt for West Virginia state championships.

The semifinals are scheduled for 7:30 tonight. The championships are scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday.

Jefferson, eighth in the Class AAA team standings, sent five - Steven Reynolds (125 pounds), Darrel Dorsey (130), Chantz Griffith (135), Codie Gustines (140) and Dustin Householder (215) - into the quarterfinals.

Reynolds pinned Riverside's Dustin Kinser in 1:01 and will meet Brook's Brandon Shaw. Dorsey decisioned Nicholas County's Douglas Bailes, 7-5, and will wrestle Parkersburg South's Matt Bosley. Griffith decisioned John Marhsall's Bill Rayl, 3-0, and will meet Point Pleasant's Nick Duncan. Gustines pinned Hurricane's Pat McBurney in 43 seconds and will wrestle Parkersburg's Billy Cornecelli. Householder pinned Riverside's T.J. Richards in 1:03. Householder next meets Roane County's Gary Nicholson.

Hedgesville's Kevin Ballam (112), Danny Lord (145) and Chuck Files (215) continued their state title hunts. Ballam pinned Phillip Barbour's Nick Burner in 1:43 and will meet Wheeling Park's Brian Humphrey. Lord pinned Herbert Hoover's J.R. Morris in 1:31. He next wrestles University's Brian Hoxter. Files pinned Huntington's Kenny Hutchinson in 2:44 and next will meet Ripley's Adam Casto.

Martinsburg's Justin Kessler also advanced at 145 with a major decision over Nicholas County's Brandon Keipler. Kessler next wrestles Point Pleasant's D.J. Deweese.

Musselman's Jeff Clark and Martinsburg's Chris Conner both pinned in their 103 bouts. Clark pinned Huntington's Josh Dudley in 1:51 and will wrestle Morgantown's Lucas Cappas. Conner pinned Cabel Midland's Matt Wilson in 58 seconds and will meet John Marshall's John Howard.

Losing in the AAA first round were Hedgesville's Josh Grimm (119), Justin Snyder (160), Mike McKinney (171) and Phil Files (189), Jefferson's Justin Hawes (145), Mike Davis (152), Justin Silverman (189), Musselman's Justin Jones (125) and Kendal Hudson (140), Martinsburg's Mike Barbour (130), Justin Bird (160), Matt Roach (171) and Ryan Bird (275).

Berkeley Springs, the lone area team in Class AA, advanced four - Brandon Clark (119), Frank Gregg (140), Jamie Moore (160) and Josh Clark (189) - into today's quarterfinals.

Brandon Clark defeated Hundred's Daniel Whiteman, 3-2, and will wrestle Independance's Jim Davis. Gregg won by technical fall over Sissonville's Brandon French, 19-3, and will meet Oak Glen's Steve Flowers. Moore decisioned Grafoton's Isaac Blair, 7-1, and will wrestle Greenbrier West's Mark Smith. Josh Clark pinned St. Marys' Kevin Cecil in 1:24 and next will meet Liberty Raleigh's Fred Lafferty.

Losing their first-round bouts for Berkeley Springs were Rick Kump (103), Brian McCann (112), Kenny Michael (125), Chris Moore (135), Matt Mason (152), Eli Parsell (171) and Donnie Stotler (215).
