Central booking facility considered

The Hagerstown City Council and Washington County Board of Commissioners agreed Tuesday to further study the benefits and cost of a central booking facility.

City Police Chief Arthur Smith and Washington County Sheriff Charles F. Mades say a central booking facility would lessen the time police officers spend processing their arrests, and thus allow the officers to get back on the road faster.

Mades said a central booking facility could be located at the detention center and a new building would not need to be built.

Mades said he "guessed" it could cost $3 million to start a central booking facility.

County Director of Public Works Gary Rohrer said the $3 million estimate was a preliminary number and included the cost of renovations, new computer software, and possibly some operational expenses.

The council and commissioners asked Rohrer, Mades and Smith to come back with a revised cost estimate and a review of the pros and cons of a central booking facility.
