Board discusses school calendar

The Washington County Board of Education on Tuesday discussed the school calendar for the 2002-2003 school year.

According to a draft of the calendar, the first day of school for students is to begin on Aug. 26. The last day of school is tentatively scheduled for June 5, depending on snow days.

Roof replacement bids awarded

The Washington County Board of Education awarded to bids Tuesday night for roof replacement projects.

Kline Associated Roofing of Hagerstown was awarded the bid for the roof replacement to Marshall Street School for $358,000.

Suburban Roofing of Mechanicsburg, Pa., was awarded the bid for the roof replacement at E. Russell Hicks Middle School for $485,645.

Dennis McGee, the board's director of facilities management, said both roofs are 25 years old and in disrepair.

He expects work to begin on the projects shortly after school lets out in June.

Administrators update assessment progress

Washington County public school administrators gave the School Board an update on the school system's countywide assessment program Tuesday.


The assessments are administered in grades kindergarten through 12. The purpose of the assessments is to provide accountability for instructional programming and curriculum and data for teachers to use to plan instruction, according to board documents.

Study groups are effort to improve instruction

Washington County Interim Schools Superintendent Elizabeth Morgan is creating two study groups in an effort to improve school instruction, she said Tuesday morning.

The groups will consist mainly of parents and staff and will study current instruction at the elementary and secondary levels, as well as propose new programs.
