Pennsylvania man is found dead on Appalachian Trail

BOONSBORO - A 74-year-old Pennsylvania man apparently died of natural causes Sunday while hiking on the Appalachian Trail near the Washington-Frederick county line.

The man's identity was not released pending notification of kin.

The man was seen by a number of other hikers Sunday morning after he parked his car in the U.S. 40 parking area and took to the trail, said John Surrick, a spokesman for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

"People saw him at his car and then on the trail and he was fine," Surrick said.

But then a 911 call came in to Washington County Fire and Rescue Communications at 10:37 a.m. indicating that a man was found unconscious along the trail.

Emergency personnel from Boonsboro Ambulance Co. responded to the call, making access to the remote area via the Boonsboro Mountain Road.

Dr. Edward Ditto, a Washington County medical examiner, was notified of the incident. Efforts to reach Ditto for more information on initial cause of death reports and where the body was taken were unsuccessful.
