James E. Burns


WAYNESBORO, Pa. - James E. Burns, 74, of 12121 Gehr Road, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at Waynesboro Hospital.

Born Sept. 1, 1927, in the Midvale area of Franklin County, Pa., he was the son of the late Thomas M. Burns Sr. and Eva V Shatzer Burns.

He was a graduate of Washington Township High School.

Early in his life, he was employed at Landis Machine Co., Waynesboro. He then went to Mack Trucks of Hagerstown, where he began to work as a toolmaker, retiring in 1987.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and later served in the Army National Guard of Waynesboro, transferring to the U.S. Air Force National Guard of Martinsburg, W.Va., in which he served during the Korean War. He retired from the Guard March 20, 1969.

He was a member of Order of the Owls Nest 1073; BPO Elks Lodge 731; FOE 1758; Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15; Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1191; Eagles Club Inc.; William Max McLaughlin VFW Post 695, A.T.H.& L. Fire Co., and the Waynesboro Fish and Game Association, all of Waynesboro; United Auto Workers Union 171, Hagerstown; Blue Ridge Sportsmen's Association, Blue Ridge Summit, Pa.; and Adams County Fish and Game Association.

He is survived by two sons, Dana E. Burns of Blue Ridge Summit, and Dirk G. Burns of Waynesboro; three brothers, the Rev. Thomas M. Burns Jr. of Spring Run, Pa., Hubert F. Burns of Dry Run, Pa., and Paul E. Burns of Waynesboro; one granddaughter; and nieces and nephews.

It was his request to have no public viewing.

Graveside services will be Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Harbaugh Church Cemetery near Rouzerville, Pa. The Rev. James T. Williams will officiate.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro.

Pauline E. Gilbert


GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Pauline Elizabeth Gilbert, 80, of 15065 Mercersburg Road, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at her home.

Born March 5, 1912, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Theora Lightliter Sweigert.

Her husband, Leo M. Gilbert, died March 7, 1979.

She retired from Maryland Ribbon Co. after 25 years of service.

She was a member of Williamsport United Methodist Church.

She is survived by one half-sister, Edna L. Slater of Hagerstown; three half-brothers, Ivan R. Sweigert, Robert Lee Sweigert and Michael L. Jones, all of Hagerstown; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Glen Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Leitersburg Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.




Wanda K. Cox


BLUE RIDGE SUMMIT, Pa. - Wanda K. Geary Cox, 50, of 14789 Wyndham Ave., died Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, at Waynesboro (Pa.) Hospital.

Born Dec. 5, 1951, in Connellsville, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Lee W. and Ellie Klink Geary.

She was a graduate of Waynesboro Area Senior High School.

She was employed as a typist at Regency Thermographics, Waynesboro, until retiring two years ago.

She was a member of Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration, Blue Ridge Summit.

She was a member of the Blue Ridge Sportsmen's Association.

She is survived by her husband, Arthur A. Cox Jr., whom she married Sept. 15, 1990; three sisters, Patricia L. Berklite, H. Virginia Cook and Sherry G. Lohman, all of Waynesboro; one brother, Terry J. Dwire of Shippensburg, Pa.; two aunts; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration, Blue Ridge Summit. The Rev. Patrick A. Pierce will officiate. Burial will be in Blue Ridge Cemetery, Thurmont, Md.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro.

Gladys J. Hartzok


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Gladys J. Hartzok, 87, of Chambersburg, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, in Chambersburg.

Born July 30, 1914, in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of the late Charles W. and Mary Keefer Jones.

Her husband, John A. Hartzok, died June 10, 1989.

She was a 1934 graduate of Shippensburg Normal School.

She was an elementary school teacher at Marion and King Street elementary schools in the Chambersburg Area School District.

She was a member of Solomon's United Church of Christ, Chambersburg.

She is survived by two sons, Jeff A. Hartzok of Laurel, Md., and Jay W. Hartzok of Chambersburg; and two grandchildren, Justus G. Hartzok and Harmony J. Hartzok.

She was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.

Graveside services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Lincoln Cemetery, Chambersburg. The Rev. Peter W. Emig will officiate.

There will be no viewing.

Arrangements are by Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home, Chambersburg.
