Melvin H. Kerns

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Melvin Howard Kerns, 68, of Berkeley Springs, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, at his home.

Born Nov. 2, 1933, in Berkeley Springs, he was the son of the late Gilbert Dorsey and Mary Catherine Peck Kerns.

He attended Berkeley Springs High School.

He worked at U.S. Silica in Berkeley Springs; and at Fleetwood Industries in Hancock.

He was a member of Wesleyan Chapel, Berkeley Springs.

He is survived by his wife, Marian Ruth McCusker Kerns; six daughters, Diane Bloyer of Stewartstown, Pa., and Donna Fleegle, Beverly Kesecker, Judy Beattie, Denise Walters and Patsy Kesecker, all of Berkeley Springs; one son, Stanley H. Kerns of Berkeley Springs; six sisters, Katherine L. Miller and Phyllis J. Batt, both of Hagerstown, Edna True of Claimant, Del., Tammy F. Moats and Jeanette Hull, both of Hancock and Velma M. Keller of Greencastle, Pa.; four brothers, Robert J. Kerns of Warfordsburg, Pa., Cletus E. Kerns of Hancock, Alston D. Kerns of Fisher, Ill. and Dwight D. Kerns of Greencastle; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.


He was preceded in death by one son, Randy Kerns, two sisters, Violet Messner and Ada Kerns; and one brother, Harry Kerns.

Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Wesleyan Chapel, Berkeley Springs. The Rev. William C. Swope will officiate. Interment will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Berkeley Springs.

The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs; and Saturday at 1 p.m. at the church. The funeral home will open today at 10:30 a.m.

Samuel E. Anderson

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Samuel E. "Sam" Anderson, 80, of 350 Geiser Ave., died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, at Waynesboro Hospital.

Born April 20, 1921, in Mercersburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Chester and Laura Gift Anderson.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Janet M. Dicken Anderson, in 1987. They were married May 21, 1941.

He was a 1939 graduate of Lemasters High School.

Prior to retiring in 1989, he was head custodian at Waynesboro Area Senior High School. He had operated a farm in Wayne Heights; and worked for Waynesboro Builders Supply.

He was a member of Waynesboro Bible Church, was Sunday School Superintendent, deacon, trustee, elder and on the Mission Board. He was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class.

He was a member of Gideons International; Rescue Mission of Hagerstown; South Chapter 2977 AARP of Waynesboro; National AARP; Future Farmers of America; and P.S.E.R.S.

He volunteered with Meals-on-Wheels of Franklin County, Pa.

He is survived by one son, David E. Anderson of Stafford, Va.; one brother, John Anderson Sr. of Greencastle, Pa.; six half-sisters, Ruth Miller and Carrie Lu Blair, both of Greencastle, Pauline Harman of Lemasters, Pa., Nell Stoner of Mercersburg, Catherine Stouffer of Waynesboro and Dorothy Rebok of Chambersburg; three half-brothers, Rollie Anderson of Greencastle, Ray Anderson of Chambersburg and Harry Anderson of Mercersburg; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; foster grandchildren; foster great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Mabel Defenderfer Anderson; one daughter, Doris J. Anderson; one son, Samuel E. Anderson Jr.; one foster son, Daniel Krocker; one sister, Mary Anderson; and one brother, Harold Anderson.

Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Waynesboro Bible Church, Waynesboro. The Rev. Robert Fitz will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro.

Mabel C. Keefer

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Mabel C. Keefer, 95, of Manorcare Health Services, and formerly of 12147 Buchanan Trail West, Mercersburg, Pa., died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, at the nursing home.

Born April 8, 1906, in Fulton County, Pa., she was the daughter of the late George and Blanche Rotz Finniff.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles F. Keefer, in 1973.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Mercersburg.

She worked for the Tuscarora School District; and Mercersburg Shirt Factory.

She is survived by one daughter, Betty M. McCullough of Romulus, N.Y.; one son, Dennis E. Keefer of Mercersburg; one sister, Florence Keefer of Mercersburg; one brother, George Finniff of Mercersburg; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Thelma L. Keefer; one sister, Ruth Seville; and two brothers, Howard Finniff and Oscar Finniff.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, Mercersburg. The Rev. Michael L. Baughman will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg.
