BALTIMORE - St. Maria Goretti tightened up its defense in the second half Sunday to catch and pull away from Cardinal Gibbons, 71-59, in a Baltimore Catholic League game.

Also, the No. 6 Gaels (19-9, 10-4) made 11 of 13 free throws down the stretch to solidify their third-place standing in the BCL.

Senior Matt Spierenburg paced Goretti with 18 points on 9-for-9 shooting, including eight points in the third quarter when the Gaels rallied from a 34-30 halftime deficit to take an 48-46 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Senior Matt Tanner had a game-high 26 points and added six rebounds and four assists. Derrick Davis had seven rebounds for Goretti.

"The key was tightening our defense in the second half," Goretti coach Cokey Robertson said.

The Gaels limited Dwight Dean to two fourth-quarter points after he tallied 24 through the first three.
