Ethel V. Dunn


MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Ethel Virginia Dunn, 98, of Martinsburg, died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at her home.

Born Sept. 29, 1903, in Martinsburg, she was the daughter of the late William N. and Mary C. Couchman Dunn.

She was a 1922 graduate of Martinsburg High School and a graduate of Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va., and Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J. She received a bachelor of science degree in education.

She was a teacher for four years in Morgantown, W.Va., and 44 years in New Brunswick, N.J. She retired in 1973.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

She was a member of the teachers organization in New Jersey.

She is survived by cousins.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Della D. Dunn and Ruth G. Dunn, and a brother, William Nelson Dunn.

Services will be Monday at 8 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg. Dr. G. Edward Grove will officiate.

Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends Monday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Martha T. Carpenter


BOONSBORO - Martha Tempest Carpenter, 67, of Fahrney Keedy Nursing Home, died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, of multiple sclerosis.

Born April 4, 1934, in Keyser, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Wesley and Zula Ferrebee Gardner.

She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Jerry Carpenter.

She was a 1952 graduate of Keyser High School. She attended Potomac State College, where she was a member of the Potomac State Singers and Shepherd College, where she was a member of the Student Christian Association.

She was a member of Sharpsburg Church of the Brethren.

She is survived by two daughters, Lynn Bibbee of Hagertown and Cathy Allen of Martinsburg, W.Va.; a son, Howard Carpenter of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; three grandchildren; and a step-grandson.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Wanda Lyons; and four brothers, Curtis L. Gardner, Talmedge Gardner, Wesley Gardner and Nelson O. Gardner.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Moler Avenue Church of the Brethren, Martinsburg, W.Va. Pastors Eddie Edmonds and Tom Fralin will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Shepherdstown, W.Va.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.

Gene A. Woodward


CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Gene Audrey Woodward, 50, of Charles Town, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born March 25, 1951, in Leesburg, Va., he was the son of the late William Junior and Alice R. Fletcher Woodward.

He worked for Burch Wood Products Inc.

He is survived by three sisters, Nellie L. Painter and Eden M. Getts, both of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., and Linda A. Cameron of Charles Town; and seven brothers, William J. Woodward, Everett J. Woodward, Roy R. Woodward and Aubrey L. Woodward, all of Charles Town, Nelson P. Woodward and Sylvester O. Woodward, both of Middleway, W.Va., and Steve D. Woodward of Ranson, W.Va.

Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home, Ranson. The Rev. Jimmy Williams will officiate. Burial will be in the Masonic Cemetery in Middleway.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral chapel.




Donald W. Eyler


BOONSBORO - Donald William Eyler, 89, of 8507 Mapleville Road, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Nov. 8, 1912, in Thurmont, Md., he was the son of the late Charles H. and Emelia Hardman Eyler.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Frances Eyler, in 1998.

He was a graduate of the University of Maryland.

He was employed by Potomac Edison, retiring in 1977 after 40 years of service.

He was a member of Hagerstown Church of the Brethren and a former member of the Kiwanis Club of Hagerstown.

He is survived by two sons, Donald W. Eyler Jr. of Philippi, W.Va., and Phillip L. Eyler of Kenora Ontario, Canada; four grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Clarice G. Martin, and a granddaughter.

Services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, Hagerstown. The Rev. Louis L. Emerick will officiate. Burial will be in Blue Ridge Cemetery, Thurmont.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Beverley V. Staff


WILLIAMSPORT - Beverley V. Staff, 87, formerly of 117 N. Artizan St., died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at Homewood Retirement Center, Williamsport.

Born July 10, 1914, in Winchester, Va., she was the daughter of the late Alonza Lee and Mary Drusilla Shiner Cline.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward McKee Staff, in 1988.
