The North Hagerstown girls basketball team struggled through the beginning and the end of Thursday night's City Game against South Hagerstown.

In between, though, the Hubs had complete control and swept the season series from the Rebels with a 41-34 victory in the Monocacy Valley Athletic League.

Katie Stamper, the Hubs' 6-foot-1 center, played a solid inside game, finishing with 15 rebounds and eight points.

"I'm happy in my senior year of beating South," Stamper said. "It's the happiest thing. I love it. Teamwork and passing the ball were the keys to our victory tonight."

Five minutes into the game, South only trailed 5-2, but the Hubs (11-7, 8-6 MVAL) closed the first quarter with a 8-0 run. They kep padding the lead the rest of the way and were up 40-20 with 4:45 left in the game.

The Rebels (1-15, 0-15), much like the first game, did not quit, scoring 14 straight points for a six-point game with 23 seconds to play.

But North's Allison Hammond hit a free throw with seven seconds left to end the upset bid.

"We wanted to have intensity and we wanted to play hard every step of the way," South Hagerstown coach Patty Leazier said. "Our girls did those things."

Hammond finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and five steals for the Hubs.

Freshman point guard Jamie Fowler scored a team-high 11 points, while Shaketa Redmond collected 19 rebounds for South.
