FROSTBURG, Md. - Walkersville coach Bryan Biehl admits his team does not have many seniors, but he does not like to refer to his wrestlers as young.

Walkersville, seeded No. 4, swept past top-seeded Beall, 36-22, then scored a 37-30 win over Williamsport to win the Class 1A/2A West Region title Wednesday night.

"This was one of our goals when we started the very first day of practice," Biehl said. "We worked so hard in the room. We practiced for this every day. I told them this is what you trained for all year - to go to the state duals."

Walkersville will travel to Lansdowne on Saturday to wrestle in the 1A/2A semifinals against a yet undetermined opponent.

Wednesday's championship bout between Walkersville and Williamsport came down to the final bout. The teams have split the first 12 bouts evenly with Walkersville owning a 31-30 lead.

Then, came the final bout as Walkersville's Danny Crum squared off against Williamsport's Corey Leggett in the 135-pound match. Crum owned a 2-0 lead entering the second period and, when Leggett chose bottom, Crum turned his opponent for the pin at 2:49 with a headlock.

"That was a senior saying, 'we're going to the state duals and you're not,'" Biehl said of Crum's bout.

"Leggett's a really strong wrestler," Crum said. "There's no describing what it's like (taking the mat for the match-deciding bout)," Crum said. "I just fended off his shot, which I practiced all week, and was able to get the pin."

"Not just a win," Biehl said. "He stuck him."

Walkersville (13-2-1) avenged a Monocacy Valley Athletic League loss to Williamsport by turning some bouts around. Junior Tim Mulford avenged a major decision loss to Travis Brown with an 6-2 win at 145 and Ryan King, who was pinned earlier this season at Williamsport, pinned.

"This, being the first time going to states in Walkersville history, this all is for coach Biehl," Mulford said. "We all were in a zone."

With all the night's matches starting at 140, Walkersville built a lead through the middle weights and then upped it to 27-12 after senior heavyweight Jason Stambaugh accepted a forfeit.

Jimmy Francis rebounded from a loss to Beall state champ Nick Durst in the semifinals to score a pin 57 seconds into the second period against Williamsport (13-3).

"I think the North match took something out of us," Williamsport coach Chuck Martin said. "We didn't wrestle with much intensity."

Ryan Bowers, who gave Williamsport quick starts with two wins at 140, pinned against Walkersville before the Lions reeled off four straight wins from 140-171.

Williamsport defeated North Hagerstown, 38-22, in the other semifinal as Brown avenged a loss to Scott Greenwald at 145 and Lord's 9-7 decision at 171.
