Roundup - Brunswick's Martin wins No. 200

* GIRLS BASKETBALL

BRUNSWICK, Md. - For every coach that pleads ignorance when approaching a victory milestone, there's a Bill Martin sitting on the other side of the fence.

Six weeks ago, the Brunswick coach never thought he'd get to win No. 200. Tuesday night, with a 53-35 victory over Francis Scott Key, he got there faster than he believed possible.

"At first I thought we needed 11 wins, and then after the North game, I saw I only needed nine," the affable Martin said. "At Christmsas, I didn't think I had a chance this season. But the girls turned this whole season around with their effort.

"That's what made this really sweet tonight."

The Railroaders started the season 1-6, but improved to 9-9 overall and 8-7 in a highly competitive Monocacy Valley Athletic League this season. Center Kacie Escamilla missed six of the team's first 10 games but her return, and the team's growing maturity, have spurred a winning trend.

"We had a rough year last year because we were so young," Martin said. "Their effort to play smarter, to play harder ... I was happy they were a part of it.

"I wish I could have every kid that played for me be a part of this. It's a great bunch of kids here. That made this nice."

Escamilla finished with 13 points and 14 rebounds, while Dana Shook added 12 points. Leah McCallum had seven boards and Amber Hemp had four steals.

"You look back, I've been so fortunate to have the players I've had over the years," Martin said. "For that much talent to come out of this little school, that's been great."
