A candle left burning unattended in a basement sparked a fire Sunday morning that caused $10,000 damage to a home at 16629 Fairview Road in Hagerstown.
Justo Molina told Maryland State fire marshals that he was awakened at 6:28 a.m. by the smoke alarm and found smoke coming from the basement.
After also seeing fire, Molina left the one-story wood frame house and called 911.
Firefighters from Maugansville, Greencastle, Pa., and Long Meadow responded to the call, along with the Washington County Emergency Air Unit.
Fire Marshal Ryan Chapman said he found a candle in the basement that had come into contact with combustibles.
FREDERICK, Md. - A man who was hit by a full-sized pickup truck as he tried to cross Interstate 270 Sunday afternoon was treated at Washington County Hospital and released.
Scott Stephen Perrine, 21, of 6960 Exeter Court, Frederick, was flown to the hospital by Maryland State Police medevac helicopter after the 4:20 p.m. accident.
