Cops say man fell in road before being hit

BUNKER HILL, W.Va. - A 45-year-old man who was struck by a car and killed outside the Ace of Clubs bar near Bunker Hill Tuesday night was identified Wednesday as John F. Gladden of Gerrardstown, police said.

Police said they believe Gladden was crossing U.S. 11 and fell in the roadway before he was struck by a car being driven by Lauren Nicole Poisal of Martinsburg.

"He was basically laying in the roadway, which shows she really didn't hit him," said Kenny Lemaster, chief deputy of the Berkeley County Sheriff's Department.

Poisal told police that by the time she saw Gladden laying in the road, she did not have time to react.

Deputies determined that Poisal was not at fault in the 8 p.m. accident, said Sheriff Randy Smith.

Patrons inside the bar said the Gladden had been in the bar before the accident.

A bartender working at the bar Wednesday afternoon said Gladden came to the bar occasionally, but she did not know him well.
