Rockets rise to victory

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Some past experiences let the James Buchanan girls basketball team give Greencastle the same old feeling.

Tied with 30 seconds left in the first half, the No. 7 Rockets scored three times before the buzzer on the way to a 49-36 victory in the Mid Penn Colonial over their archrival.

"Our last eight or nine games have come down to the wire it seems," JB coach Megan Swailes said. "And the Greencastle game is the one where the pressure is always on. But the girls know the situation now. They've got to win to get into (the Mid Penn and District 3 playoffs)."

With the game knotted at 21-21, JB's Lori Stauder scored the last six points of the half on a layup and a pair of 8-foot jumpers in the lane. The Rockets' seniors put the pressure on Greencastle's inexperienced back court and wilted them.

"That little spurt right before half just cost us," Greencastle coach Doug Stuart said. "Maybe we even go into the half up two, and we throw it around and they're up six."

With a lead in hand, JB (13-6, 3-1) put a halt on its normal transition game and wore down the clock to put the Blue Devils away.

"Tonight, we wanted to be patient and go for the nice shot," Swailes said. "And then they had to foul and we made the shots. The girls kept their heads and we needed that tonight."

Stauder finished with 19 points and 13 rebounds, while Abby Stoner had 14 points and eight rebounds for JB. Jess Statler led Greencastle (7-12, 1-4) with 11 points.

"The bright spot is this is the best game we've probably played in a month," Stuart said. "But their experience, and our inexperience, was a factor in the last 35 seconds."
