Substance found at IRS not anthrax

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Tests on a powdery substance found in a package sent to the Internal Revenue Service Computing Center last Tuesday have tested negative for anthrax, the administrator of the Berkeley County Health Department said Tuesday.

Health department officials were informed Monday that the substance was not anthrax, according to Jay Jack.

The substance was tested at a state public health lab in South Charleston, W.Va., Jack said.

It is believed the powdery residue came from packing material in a package that held magnetic tape records, said Jack.

As a precautionary measure, three IRS employees were taken to City Hospital after the substance was discovered last Tuesday afternoon, rescue officials said.

The IRS center is along W.Va. 9 near Baker Heights.
