Proposals include development of a county marketing strategy

The Hagerstown-Washington County Economic Development Commission announced the following proposed 2002 Strategic Priorities at an EDC dinner Monday night:

- Assist and retain existing businesses by such means as increasing the number of visits and calls to businesses, promoting businesses through special events and providing incentive programs.

- Develop a marketing strategy appropriate to Washington County's assets after identifying assets unique to the county and the industries that will best complement those assets.

- Support the City of Hagerstown in the creation of a thriving urban area by encouraging development of such major projects as the Arts and Entertainment District and the University System of Maryland-Hagerstown Campus.

- Develop a financial incentive plan for Washington County's targeted businesses. This would involve partnering with the Board of County Commissioners to develop funding criteria.

- Enhance work force capabilities by improving partnerships between business and education. Means to create a stronger workforce include convincing employers to start tuition subsidy programs, linking employers to work force training programs at area high schools and colleges, and getting employers to support scholarships and internships.

- Establish permanent supplemental funding sources.

The complete action plan for the proposed 2002 Strategic Priorities can be requested from the EDC at 301-791-3080.
