Police confirm Watkins as shooter

Staff and wire reports

The two women killed Thursday in Fulton County each died of a single gunshot wound to the upper body, Pennsylvania State Trooper Michael Sprague said Friday.

Police confirmed the two were killed by Shawn Michael Watkins, 19, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The wounds suggest Watkins used a rifle but it is unknown what the caliber was, Fulton County Coroner Daryl Heckman said Friday.

Police are not releasing information on a motive.

Watkins apparently took his own life after shooting and killing estranged girlfriend Beth M. Fogal, 20, and her grandmother, Aletha R. Hamilton, 78, at a home in rural Fort Littleton, Pa., police said.

Watkins also shot Thomas L. Blue, 31, of McConnellsburg, Pa. Blue was listed in fair condition Friday night at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown, a nursing supervisor said.

Police said Watkins went to the victims' trailer home twice Thursday morning. He got into an argument with at least one of the victims before he returned and shot Fogal, Hamilton and Blue, police said.

State police in McConnellsburg responded to the scene in Dublin Township, about 15 miles north of McConnellsburg, at about 6:25 a.m.

Fogal's 14-month-old child was in the home at the time of the shooting but was unharmed.

The suspect fled after the shooting and was holed up in a house about 2 miles from the crime scene, police said. Heckman pronounced him dead at 4:19 p.m. Thursday.
