Virgil L. Hykes


MAUGANSVILLE - Virgil Lester Hykes, 68, of 13922 Greenfield Ave., died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at his home.

Born Feb. 16, 1933, in Waynesboro, Pa., he was the son of the late Aaron L. and Ethel Rose Young Hykes.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Janice Hykes; and by his second wife, Joanne Rider Hykes.

He was employed by Fairchild Aircraft; and retired from Conrail Chessie after 34 years.

A veteran of the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army.

He was a member of Harvest Baptist Church.

He is survived by two stepsons, Robert W. Rider Jr. of Greencastle, Pa. and Randy L. Rider of Maugansville; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an aunt, Susan Hykes, who raised him.

Services will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, Hagerstown. The Rev. James E. Moore will officiate. Burial will be in Beaver Creek Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home.

Dawn M. Myers


ROMNEY, W.Va. - Dawn Marie Myers, 43, of Romney, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at Integrated Health Services of West Virginia in Charles Town.

Born April 20, 1958, in Bethesda, Md., she was the daughter of Rose Marie Thir of Rockville, Md., and the late Michael Francis Thir.

She was a graduate of Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville.

She had been a sales representative in the retail jewelry industry.

She was of the Catholic faith.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her fianc, John Hubbard of Romney; one daughter, Paige Kristen Myers of Bakerton, W.Va.; and two sisters, Pamela T. Hinkle of Shenandoah Junction, W.Va., and Stephanie L. Thir of Daisy, Md.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Michael B. Thir.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, 310 Fairfax Blvd., Charles Town. Pastor Harry Young will officiate. Burial will be private.

There will be no visitation.




Charles F. Sperry


LEETOWN, W.Va. - Charles Franklin Sperry, 86, of Sulphur Spring Road, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at City Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Aug. 14, 1915, in Middletown, Va., he was the son of the late Frank Herbert and Mary Willey Sperry.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Jones Sperry.

He was a graduate of Harpers Ferry High School.

He retired from Chessie System, as a sectional foreman.

He was a member of Bolivar United Methodist Church.

He is survived by two daughters, Virginia Webb and Lea Anna Sperry, both of Charles Town, W.Va.; five sons, Charles D. Sperry of Thurmont, Md., Lloyd F. Sperry of Inwood, W.Va., Frederick Sperry of Martinsburg, Jay K. Sperry of Shenandoah Junction, W.Va. and Jeff Sperry of Charles Town; a sister, Grace V. Mater of Charles Town; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary F. Bussard; and a brother, Herbert E. Sperry.

Services will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home, Harpers Ferry. The Rev. Paul Ritter will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Lutheran Cemetery, Bolivar.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Robert B. Mitchell


FALLING WATERS, W.Va. - Robert Benjamin Mitchell, 85, of 104 Grade Road, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at his home.

Born Jan. 2, 1917, in Williamsport, he was the son of the late Fred and Georgia Anna Lowman Castle Mitchell.

His wife, Irene Elizabeth Sharer Mitchell, died in 1996.

He retired from Cushwa Brick in Williamsport in 1982.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Hagerstown.

He was a member of VFW Clarence Armstrong Post 6241 in Mercersburg, Pa.

He is survived by one daughter, Betty Lou Boarman of Falling Waters; two sons, Robert Leslie Mitchell and William Arthur Mitchell, both of Hagerstown; one brother, Walter Mitchell; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Catherine Holland.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, Williamsport. The Rev. Dennis Upton will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Williamsport, with military honors by Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will be open after 9 a.m.

Donald E. May


CAMP HILL, Pa. - The Rev. Donald E. May, 76, of 343 Regent St., and formerly of Chambersburg, Pa., died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Menno-Haven in Chambersburg.

Born Feb. 14, 1925, in Paris, France, he was the son of the late Rev. Phillip J. and Ellen Belk May.
