Southern Fulton boys ends losing streak vs. Tussey Mountain

* BOYS BASKETBALL

WARFORDSBURG, Pa. - No. 8 Southern Fulton kicked the monkey off its back on Thursday night because there was simply no more room for him.

The Indians kept hauling around each other in their showdown game with Tussey Mountain, and broke a 12-game losing streak to the Titans with a 71-63 victory.

"The kids deserved this, they really did," Indians coach Kent Hendershot said. "And they did it with an exclamation point."

Southern Fulton (16-1, 8-1) had lost 29 of the last 30 games in the series, including a 81-59 loss on Dec. 4, but led almost the entire way in this one. The Indians led by 15 midway through the second quarter before a tug-of-war second half.

The Titans (10-2, 8-1) closed it to 66-63 with 49.3 seconds to play and had a shot to tie, but Marcus Stevenson's 3 was off. The Indians' Tim Keebaugh got the rebound and tipped it to Will Whiteside, who drove the length of the floor for a layup and a five-point lead. Whiteside then stole the inbounds pass was fouled and made both free throws to seal the game.

Matt Meyer finished with 19 points, Dustin Wills had 14 and Lance Bernhard added nine, including two huge baskets in the final 3 minutes.

"It got pretty old, everyone saying we couldn't beat them," said Whiteside, who finished with 23 points, eight rebounds and five assists. "It felt pretty great to finally do it."
