CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Borough Council members voted 8-2 Wednesday to change its weekly meeting night, breaking a long-standing tradition.

Mayor Tom Newcomer proposed earlier this month shifting council meetings from Wednesdays to another night to allow council members to attend church functions or Chambersburg Area School District meetings, which are also on Wednesdays.

Council has met Wednesdays at 7 p.m. for nearly 30 years, however, the majority wanted to see the meetings moved to Tuesdays.

The next council meeting will be Tuesday, Feb. 12.

Council members Carl Helman, Sharon Bigler, Scott Thomas, Robert Wareham, Bill McLaughlin, Ruth Harbaugh, Ken Gill and Allen Frantz voted Wednesday to shift meetings to Tuesday nights.

Only Councilmen John Redding Jr. and Allen Coffman opposed the move.

Initially, Coffman, Redding and Harbaugh submitted in writing to borough staff their preference to keep meetings on Wednesdays.

However, Harbaugh changed her mind.

"I had several phone calls asking me to reconsider Tuesdays because Wednesdays are church nights," Harbaugh said.

Council will now hold public meetings the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month beginning at 7 p.m. at Chambersburg Borough Hall. It will hold public workshops the third Tuesday of the month.

It will not meet the first Tuesday of the month to accommodate the schedule of the Planning and Zoning Board.

The borough's Zoning Hearing Board and Recreation Board will have to shift their meeting nights, however, because of the council's decision.
