Leopards end the suspense

By JACK HILL III / Staff Correspondent

SMITHSBURG - With its pressure defense and speedy guards, the Smithsburg girls basketball team likes things to be fast and quick on the court.

Wednesday night, they included the scoreboard in that process.

The No. 4 Leopards scored the first 21 points of the game, holding North Hagerstown scoreless for 10 1/2 minutes to win 71-25 in the Monocacy Valley Athletic League.

"We just came out and played a full-court game," Smithsburg coach Jimmy Powell said. "We used our pressure defense to cause a lot of turnovers tonight. We were playing good team basketball tonight as we saw the open players and passed the ball to them extremely well."

Smithsburg (13-2, 9-2) stayed 1 1/2 games behind Walkersville in the league standings and dealt North's slim title hopes a fatal blow all in the same night.

Without point guard Christine Ennis, the Hubs (8-5, 5-4) were run ragged by Smithsburg's relentless attack.

"We passed the ball well and we had a great fast break," said Smithsburg's Eariel Gholson, who finished with a team-high 24 points and nine rebounds. "Our unselfish play really helped us tonight."

Katy Powell finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds, Michelle Feiser had 10 points and point guard Jenelle Stouffer had seven assists for Smithsburg.
