Bulldogs' early run overwhelms Eagles

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - The Martinsburg girls basketball team didn't waste any time on Monday.

The Bulldogs scored the game's first 14 points of the game in the opening 6 minutes, 40 seconds. The work day was all but over as Martinsburg scored a 51-32 victory over Hedgesville.

Senior forward Sha Anderson scored nine points - including a pair of 3-pointers - in Martinsburg's opening flurry, which resulted in an 18-5 lead over the Eagles (6-9) by the end of the first quarter.

"I thought that we came down and we were patient," Martinsburg coach Don Bullett said. "We got some good looks at the basket. Sha Anderson did a great job of shooting the ball. She got set. When she gets set, she can knock them down."

Hedgesville coach Ben Merica said he was disappointed in his team's slow start.

"We just weren't able to settle into running any offense against their man-to-man defense," Merica said. "We were pretty helter skelter out there for the most part. We were just standing around lost."

Anderson finished with 21 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, to go with seven steals and three assists. Guard Tasha Robinson added six steals and three assists, point guard Bridget Merceruio made six steals and center Stephanie Harrold grabbed six rebounds for the Bulldogs.

"The key is our pressure defense," Bullett added. "We like to put pressure on people. We played good defense throughout the entire ballgame. We got a lot of players into the ballgame and they played great man-to-man defense."

Danielle Gorman topped the Eagles with 14 points.

Martinsburg held a 17-8 advantage in offensive rebounds over Hedgesville.

"We just couldn't get the offensive rebounds," Merica said. "We will just have to find some gamers that can come through for us when we play big-time teams."
