Dr. John H. Hopkins


Dr. John Henry Hopkins, 83, of 15 Mealey Parkway, Hagerstown, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Oct. 5, 1918, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Alfred and Susan Baker Hopkins.

He attended Broadway-Wayside School, Woodland Way and Hagerstown High School before transferring to Augusta Military Academy in Fort Defiance, Va. He attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va., and the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 1945.

He assisted Dr. Howard Baker for two years, then opened his own practice in 1947. He maintained his practice for 50 years, and he assisted the Washington County Health Department with rabies clinics for many years. He worked at local livestock markets until he was legally blind from glaucoma.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army in the Specialized Training Program.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he served as past superintendent of the Intermediate Department.

He was an honorary member of A.V.M.A. and was past president of Western Maryland Veterinary Association.

He is survived by his wife, Wilmarie Billie Hopkins, whom he married May 27, 1947; a daughter, Kitty L. Hopkins of Hagerstown; two sons, Jack H. Hopkins and Dick T. Hopkins, both of Hagerstown; a brother, William A. Hopkins Jr. of Hagerstown; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ann Elizabeth Young and Dorothy L. Poist.

Services will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

M. Carl Rudy


WAYNESBORO, Pa. - M. Carl Rudy, 61, of 15 S. Grant St., died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at his home.

Born Dec. 15, 1940, in Georgetown, Md., he was the son of the late Edward L. and Charlotte M. Glass Rudy.

He was a 1958 graduate of Waynesboro Area Senior High School.

He was employed as a loan officer by First National Bank in Waynesboro, retiring in 1998 after 35 years of service.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1958 to 1962.

He was a member of Church of the Apostles in Waynesboro.

He was a member of Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15, Eagles Club Inc. and BPO Elks Lodge 731, all of Waynesboro.

He volunteered as a school mentor at Fairview Avenue School in Waynesboro.

He is survived by his wife, Debra Y. Brechbiel Rudy, whom he married Dec. 15, 1973; two sisters, E. June Fogle of San Diego, Calif., and Bonnie R. Wolff of Waynesboro; a brother, Monte E. Rudy of Waynesboro; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro. Pastor Carol A. Kipe will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, where an Elks Memorial Service will be held at 8.

Richard B. Haugh


McLEAN, Va. - Richard B. "Dick" Haugh, 56, of 7300 Dartford Drive, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at his home.

Born March 27, 1945, in Waynesboro, Pa., he was the son of Margaret J. Bell of Waynesboro and the late Robert L. Haugh.

He attended Waynesboro schools.

He was a maintenance technician for Gates, Hudson and Associates in McLean for the past year. He also worked as a maintenance technician for Hunting Ridge Condominiums in Greenbelt, Md., for 26 years.

He was a member of the former First Christian Church in Waynesboro.

He was a social member of Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15 of Waynesboro.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Linda L. Rowe Haugh, whom he married Sept. 30, 1972; a son, Kevin M. Bell Haugh at home; a brother, Garry L. Haugh of Waynesboro; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro. The Rev. Walter A. Stuart will officiate. Burial will be in Ringgold Cemetery, Ringgold.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

JoAnn B. Crilley


WAYNESBORO, Pa. - JoAnn Baugher Helser Crilley, 63, of 11175 Bailey Spring Road, died Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at the Bay View Burn Center of Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, as a result of burns received in her home Dec. 3, 2001.

Born April 16, 1938, in Waynesboro, she was the daughter of the late Austin B. and Thelma G. Morrow Helser.

She was a 1956 graduate of Smithsburg High School.

She was employed as a machine operator by Fairfield Shoe Factory and Gettysburg Shoe Factory and had worked at Knouse Foods in Orrtanna, Pa.
