Emmert J. Rowland Sr.


FAIRFIELD, Pa. - Emmert J. Rowland Sr., 81, of 2055 Iron Springs Road, died Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at Waynesboro (Pa.) Hospital.

Born Nov. 27, 1920, in Rouzerville, Pa., he was the son of the late Jacob and Mabel Flenner Rowland.

He attended Monterey Schools in Blue Ridge Summit, Pa.

He was a truck driver for various trucking companies in the area. Prior to retiring in the early 1980s, he worked in the foundry at Landis Tool Co., Waynesboro, for 33 years. He also served as a constable in the Waynesboro area for 10 years.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the South Pacific Theater.

He was a gunsmith.

He was a member of Calvary Chapel Episcopal Church in Beartown, Pa.

He was a member of William Max McLaughlin VFW Post 695, Waynesboro; Blue Ridge Sportsman's Association, Blue Ridge Summit; Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15, Waynesboro; and Amvets Post 172, Fairfield.

He is survived by his companion of more than 30 years, Emma L. "Sue" Coleman; a son, Emmert J. Rowland Jr. of Rouzerville; two sisters, Nina Emory of Beartown, and Ruby Crilley of Gettysburg, Pa.; two brothers, Raymond Rowland of Rouzerville, and Kenneth Rowland of Beartown; a number of grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Gary Rowland and Randy Creager; two sisters, Betty Green and Geneva Shockey; and a brother, Delbert Rowland.

Services will be Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. Eugene M. Cline will officiate. Burial will be in Harbaugh Church Cemetery, Rouzerville.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.


Luther K. Rotz Sr.


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Luther K. Rotz Sr., 87, of 2228 New Franklin Road, died Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born April 29, 1914, near New Franklin, Pa., he was the son of the late Clarence A. and Elsie Jane Fisher Rotz.

His first wife, Helen M. McCleary Rotz, died Sept. 12, 1988. They were married June 29, 1935.

He attended Guilford Township schools.

He was employed by Walker Brothers Feed Store, Chambersburg, for a number of years. In 1964, he began working at Grove Manufacturing, Shady Grove, Pa., as a machinist. He retired July 1, 1981.

He was a member of Calvary Assembly of God Church. He taught Sunday School and was a member of the Adult Sunday School class.

He was a member of the National AARP.

He is survived by his second wife, Helen O.R. Bingaman Yeakle Rotz, whom he married May 20, 1989; a daughter, Janet R. Eshleman of Scotland, Pa.; two sons, Luther K. Rotz Jr. and David M. Rotz, both of Chambersburg; a stepson, the Rev. Samuel D. Yeakle of Evansville, Ind.; a brother, Harold W. Rotz of Fayetteville, Pa; five grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Blanche Rotz and Ruth Rotz; and four brothers, Merle Rotz, George Rotz, Howard Rotz and John Rotz.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Calvary Assembly of God Church, 116 Snider Ave., Waynesboro, Pa. The Revs. Dawn N. Newsome, Walter A. Stuart and Croft M. Pentz will officiate. Burial will be in Grindstone Hill Cemetery, near New Franklin.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro.

Merl A. Diehl


HOUSTON, Texas - Merl Alice Diehl, 91, of Houston, and formerly of Hagerstown, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, in Texas.

Born Nov. 17, 1910, in Clifton Forge, Va., she was the daughter of the late William Clyde and Margaret Huddle Seal.

Her husband, William C. Diehl, died in 1989.

She was employed by American Fruit Growers Association, Fairchild Aircraft Corp. and Mackley Law Firm.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hagerstown.

She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star 89, Hagerstown.

She is survived by a nephew, Dr. William S. Byers; a great-niece; and two great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Louise S. Byers.

Services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Quentin J. Fleming will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.




Kevin L. Rhodes


ST. THOMAS, Pa. - Kevin L. Rhodes, 30, of 7208 Lincoln Way West, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, in an accident on Edenville Road.

Born Oct. 30, 1971, in Chambersburg, Pa., he was the son of Bonnie K. Wenger of St. Thomas, and Leslie Rhodes of Melbourne, Fla.

He was employed as a bartender at the Venice Inn, Hagerstown.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother, Richard Rhodes of St. Thomas; maternal grandmother, Mildred Bordell Wenger of St. Thomas; paternal grandmother, Elsie Rhodes of Maryland; and aunts, uncles and cousins.
