Offray lays off 15

Ribbon manufacturer C.M. Offray & Son Inc. laid off approximately 15 people Friday as the garment industry continued to be hit hard by the national recession, the Hagerstown plant's manager said Tuesday.

A few more people may be laid off by spring if the economy doesn't turn around, said Plant Manager Rick Lee.

Although the most recent layoff is considered permanent, those employees could be recalled within a year if the situation improves, Lee said.

The company laid off 30 workers temporarily on Nov. 23, and hired them back Jan. 7, Lee said.

Lee said he is hopeful he will be able to rehire the workers since economists anticipate the economy will improve by mid-year. He said, however, there's nothing specifically encouraging him.
