HCC earns 400th victory for Palmer

NORTH EAST, Md. - It happened even quicker than Hagerstown Community College women's basketball coach Marlys Palmer would have guessed.

Sure, she knew she was in line to win the 400th game of her coaching career, but didn't expect it just 15 games into the season.

Maggie Robinson and Vennece Fowlkes took control in the second half to lead HCC to a 73-55 victory over Cecil.

Fowlkes scored 19 points and pulled down 21 rebounds while Robinson scored a game-high 26 points to pace the Hawks to their 13th win in 15 games.

"Milestones don't come around very often," Palmer said. "We are 13-2 and I didn't think we would get it this quick. I'm glad that these girls are involved in the milestone. It's not just the starters. It's the players off the bench, too. Everyone is helping out somehow."

HCC trailed early in the first half and broke loose for a 36-30 halftime lead.

Fowlkes, who played with a sinus infection, played a major role as HCC combated Cecil's quickness by forgetting the press and packing in a zone defense. It helped the Hawks score a 51-31 rebounding advantage.
